LIHHS volunteers come from all walks of life and they each bring unique skills and interests that enrich the lives of our clients. Some of our volunteers have experienced hospice or home support in their own families; others are passionate about building relationships and supporting their neighbors who are aging in place or experiencing loss. While our volunteers are drawn to LIHHS for many reasons, all are committed to being fully present with clients and seeing their service as a relationship between equals.

Comprehensive Volunteer Training prepares our volunteers for one-to-one service in a wide variety of situations. LIHHS offers training in how to be a caring presence with someone who is ill, injured, or dying. We explore communication skills, family systems, working with dementia, boundaries, death and dying, bereavement, and practical specifics including the types of support LIHHS offers.
LIHHS volunteers provide a variety of home support services, including respite for family or paid caregivers; friendly visits for socialization, reassurance, and active listening; and practical support such as transportation to on-island appointments, light housekeeping, meal prep, light gardening, errands, and delivery.

After submitting a volunteer application (see links below), passing a background check, and participating in offered training, LIHHS Volunteers are ready to begin service and are matched with a client. Volunteers are offered on-going support by the Client Services Manager who provides 1:1 check ins, opportunities for reflection with other volunteers, and additional trainings based on relevant home or hospice support topics.
