Hand-Turned Maple Serving Bowl by TJ Anderson
Crafted by Lopez Island woodturner TJ Anderson, this beautifully shaped maple bowl brings a quiet radiance to the table. The maple came from a mature tree on the north end of Lopez Island—one that had grown so large it began blocking precious sunlight from the property. As he notes, “the good news is the stump was left big enough to regenerate new branches,” ensuring the tree’s story continues even as this piece begins a new one.
Maple’s smooth, flowing grain reveals itself with soft golden hues that glow gently without overwhelming—an understated, natural warmth that is signature to this species. Under TJ’s skilled turning, the bowl becomes both functional and sculptural: sturdy enough for everyday use, refined enough to display as an art piece. It is fully food-safe and ideal for serving fruit, bread, or seasonal sides, or for anchoring a kitchen or dining space as a timeless handmade centerpiece.
This bowl is a wonderful complement to TJ’s sycamore offering, also part of this year’s auction—each shaped from local wood with its own history, each transformed through the same thoughtful craftsmanship.
A beautifully crafted vessel with deep island roots, ready to be cherished for generations.
