Getting Home Safely – A Partnership with the Lopez Fire Department
Last year, your donations helped us increase the level of support we can provide with our small safety grants to reflect current costs of construction and to purchase additional gear, including smaller sized crutches and walkers for our medical equipment shed.
This year, LIHHS is looking to help folks return home safely after emergencies. We will be using these funds to partner with the Lopez Island Fire Department and EMS Association by providing flying ‘bags’ for those in our community who are airlifted off Lopez and find themselves in need of information and resources to return safely to their home.
We currently support Lopez residents who have experienced emergencies by loaning medical equipment like crutches or wheelchairs and by setting up volunteer support. This new program is a revival of a program we have supported in the past, and will be updated to reflect new needs including the increased cost of lodging and transportation.
The bags will contain information on social services available at local hospitals, options for transport back to the Anacortes ferry terminal, nearby hotel accommodations, and will provide financial assistance when it is needed.
