“Story Plate – Richardson” Platter by Nancy Bingham
Beloved Lopez ceramicist Nancy Bingham has spent more than four decades shaping clay into pieces that honor the island she calls home. Her “story plates” are each inspired by a specific Lopez landscape and the memories, rhythms, and small wonders rooted there: a continuing series celebrating her favorite corners of the island.
This year’s offering, “Story Plate – Richardson,” reflects the quiet beauty of the island’s southern shoreline. Rendered in Nancy’s signature cobalt palette through a hand painted wax resist process, the plate captures the sense of place that makes her work so instantly recognizable: sweeping water and rocky edges, wildlife in motion, and the layered textures of land and sea that shape daily life here.
It’s a joy to have a new plate from her in this year’s auction—an addition that feels especially meaningful given that, not long ago, she wasn’t sure she’d be able to continue her ceramic work. That makes this platter not only beautiful, but also a small celebration of renewal and persistence.
This beautiful piece is a stoneware/porcelain mix that can be used as a serving piece or hung as art: a timeless, handcrafted tribute to the island and to an enduring contributor to Lopez’s vibrant arts community for over 40 years.
